The seven stops the listing names, in order

The listing for this site's day names seven stops and gives each a time. The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary comes first, at 60 minutes. A drive north follows to the Tegallalang rice terrace, where the listing allots 45 minutes, and then comes a jungle restaurant with a jungle swing inside it, at 60 minutes. That is the first half of the list: forest, terraces and a lunch with a view.

The second half starts at Tirta Empul, the holy spring temple, for 60 minutes. Tegenungan waterfall follows for 45 minutes, then the Ubud traditional market for 30 minutes and the Ubud palace for 30 minutes. Water, shopping and royal history close the list, in that order. The palace is in the heart of Ubud, at the crossing of Monkey Forest road and Jalan Raya Ubud.3,4

Add the seven times and they come to 330 minutes, which leaves 270 minutes of the 10-hour day that the listing does not assign to a stop. Those minutes have to cover the driving between stops, and the listing gives no start time, so treat the listed times as visit lengths, not as a clock. The plan below keeps the listing's sequence and adds what the official sources say about each stop.

Where the 10 hours really go

Distances decide the day in any Ubud tour itinerary, and only one is given by a ministry source: the Tegallalang terraces are a short 20-minute drive north of Ubud.6 Tegenungan lies on the Petanu River in Gianyar Regency, close to Ubud.10 The listing assigns its 270 unassigned minutes to nothing in particular, so ask your driver for the route and the longest leg in advance.

Lunch is built into the middle of the list. The listing describes the 60-minute jungle restaurant stop as good food in a natural setting, with a jungle swing inside the restaurant overlooking the jungle. The listing calls the day a private tour with lunch; it does not say what lunch costs or whether drinks are included, so ask which of those the booking covers before you pay.

A private day of 10 hours with a maximum group of 15 is a long day for children and older relatives. If someone in the group tires easily, the 30-minute market and palace stops at the end of the list are the natural ones to shorten, and a private tour is the format where you can ask. A short stop skipped near the end costs less than a long stop rushed in the middle.

Tuning the order around opening hours and crowds

Opening hours set some limits. The Monkey Forest opens at 9:00 AM, closes at 6:00 PM and admits its last visitor at 5:00 PM.1 The ministry suggests Tirta Empul in the morning, around 8 to 10 local time, for a quieter pool.16 In the listed order Tirta Empul is the fourth stop, so the start time of your day decides whether it falls inside that window.

Indonesia Travel suggests exploring the Tegallalang rice fields while the sun is still young and making for the Monkey Forest afterward, which is the reverse of the listing's order.17 Neither order is wrong: they trade a calm forest against a calm terrace. Ask the operator whether the order can change before you pay, and write the answer down.

The waterfall and the temple both ask you to get wet or wear cloth, so keep them together in your plan: a kamen and shawl are required before the Tirta Empul pool, and a change of clothes is advised.8 At Tegenungan you descend stairs to reach the water.9 Put the swim and the dry clothes after the temple, and leave the market and palace, which need no change, for last.

Adjust the plan

How should you tune the order?

Start from what you most want from the day, then ask the operator for it.

  • If I want the forest calm

Be at the gate at opening

It opens at 9:00 AM and keeps its last entrance at 5:00 PM.1

  • If I want a quiet holy spring

    Ask for Tirta Empul early

The ministry suggests around 8 to 10 in the morning.16

  • If I want soft light on the terraces

    Ask to start at Tegallalang

Indonesia Travel suggests the terraces while the sun is young.17

  • If I tire easily

    Shorten the market and palace

Each has a 30-minute stop at the end of the list.

  • If I am going in the wet months

Pack a rain layer and grip

Tegenungan's paths can be slippery from November to March.18

What to expect and what to carry at each stop

At the forest, the sanctuary's rules are plain: do not touch the monkeys or try to pick them up, keep a respectful distance, and do not feed them unless trained staff supervise.19 Bringing food or drinks in is prohibited, because the monkeys may grab anything edible.20 The sanctuary also asks visitors to dress appropriately and discourages revealing clothing.21

At the terraces you can cross a small stream to reach the fields on the other side, and exploring takes approximately 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, a wider range than the 45 minutes the listing gives.22 Indonesia Travel advises bringing water and putting on sunscreen.23 Treat the 45 minutes as a walk along the edge of the terraces rather than a descent into the fields.

At the market, the ministry says to be prepared to haggle, as prices are often negotiable.11 At the palace, parts of the complex remain the royal family's residence and parts are open to the public.3 The listing gives each of the two stops 30 minutes, enough for a first look at either, though not for both with a purchase and a long photo stop.

Dry weeks, rainy weeks and the day's plan

Across most of the country, Java and Bali among it, the dry months fall between April and October and the wet months between November and March.2 In the Japan Meteorological Agency's Denpasar normals, January brings 350.7 mm, February 289.8 mm and March 231.1 mm.13 They give 107.4 mm for April and 27.6 mm for July, so the drop from the wet months to the dry months is steep and the shoulder months can go either way.14

November and December come in at 131.2 mm and 327.4 mm, which puts the start of the wet season in November and its peak around the new year.15 These are readings for Denpasar, not for Ubud, which lies inland, so use them as a guide to the pattern of the year rather than a forecast for your day. The chart on this page shows mid-month daylight and the airport's temperatures, for the same reason.

In the rainy season, Tegenungan has a stronger, more dramatic flow, and its paths can be slippery and less accessible.18 A 10-hour day outdoors in those months wants a rain layer and shoes with grip; a day in the dry months wants water and sunscreen instead.23 Cancelling is free up to 24 hours before, which lets you watch the forecast before you commit.

Booking the day: price, cancellation and what to confirm

The day is listed from $59, with 9,225 reviews rated 4.98, of which 9,093 are five-star. Free cancellation is allowed up to 24 hours before for a full refund. The activity provider is Hire Bali Driver. Those are the figures the listing gives; the rest of this section is about what it leaves open, and about how to read the number against other days on offer.

Three things are worth confirming in writing before you pay: whether entrance tickets are included, whether the swing carries a fee, and whether hotel pickup is part of the price. The gate-fees guide on this site sets out what the official sources say about each ticket, and its calculator turns the starting price into a total for your group.

Set the shapes side by side before you commit. A 9-hour full-day Ubud tour over similar ground is listed from $13 with about 75 minutes at each of 5 named stops, a different shape from the seven shorter stops here. A tour of 5 to 8 hours starts at Tegenungan waterfall and ends at Tirta Empul, and is listed from $20. Pick the shape that suits your energy, not only the number.
