Getting your bearings in a small, hilly town

As Indonesia.Travel explains, the town is named after ubad, the Balinese term for medicine, inspired by the abundance of medicinal plants and herbs in the region.4 The center still works at a walking scale. The ministry's advice is to explore the town on foot or by hired bicycle or motorbike, and to ask locals which places suit which mode, since the terrain is hilly.1 Start with the idea that this is a place you move through slowly, with a few firm appointments and a lot of room around them.

That advice shapes the plan. The core sights, the palace, the art market, the Saraswati temple and the museums, sit within a short stroll of one another along the main road, so they suit a half-day on foot. The Monkey Forest lies south of the center, and the terraces, springs and waterfalls lie north and east, where a driver or a rented scooter makes more sense. Pairing a short walk with a driver for the far sights is usually more comfortable than trying to do everything on one mode.

Think in four clusters: the central loop, the green fringes, the sanctuary and the holy-water sites further out. Add the evening dance at the end of the day and you have a complete plan. The map at the top of this page marks each cluster, so you can see how far apart the groups are before you commit to a driver or a pair of walking shoes. Counting the clusters before you book keeps you from stacking two far-flung sights on the same afternoon.

The central loop: palace, market, temple, museum

Ubud Palace, also called Puri Saren Agung, is the official residence of the Ubud royal family in the heart of town, and the ministry says parts of it are still lived in while some areas are open to the public.7 Another ministry page calls it a museum and a hub for traditional Balinese arts, and says you can visit in the evening to watch traditional performances for an admission fee of approximately Rp100,000.9 Daytime is for looking at carved gates and courtyards.

The Ubud Art Market, Pasar Seni Ubud, sells Balinese souvenirs, handicrafts, jewelry and clothing, and the ministry notes that prices are often negotiable.6 Pura Taman Saraswati is listed as free, open 07.00 to 17.00 WITA on Jalan Kajeng, and known for the lotus pond at the front of the temple.5 The three can be walked in a single loop in about a morning, with time for coffee. Go with a small budget in mind and a polite smile, and treat the first price as the start of a conversation.

For art, the ministry names Museum Puri Lukisan, ARMA, Museum Rudana, Neka Art Museum and the eccentric Blanco Renaissance Museum as the places to explore.10 Puri Lukisan is called the oldest art museum in Bali, and it was established in 1956 by the King of Ubud together with Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, to protect Balinese art from being lost or sold abroad.11,12 One museum is enough for most days; choose by taste.

Green mornings: ridge walk, terraces and heron village

Campuhan Ridge Walk is listed by Indonesia.Travel as a free place open 24 hours on Jalan Raya Campuhan in Sayan, with a gentle trekking path over rolling green hills.13 Another page gives the hike to the peak as about 15 to 20 minutes over 2 kilometers and warns that there are no eateries along the way, so bring food and drinks.2,16 A third page calls it a nine-kilometer hill track, which is a disagreement worth noting.17

Tegallalang Rice Terrace is a short 20-minute drive north of Ubud, and the ministry suggests allowing 30 minutes to 1.5 hours to explore it.18,19 It recommends exploring the terraces early in the morning.20 The full guide to the terraces has the stream crossing, the swing sign and the coffee stop; here it is enough to say that it is the usual first stop on a northern loop. Fit it into the morning, before heat and crowds build, and keep the Monkey Forest for later in the day.

For an evening that is not a show, the ministry lists Petulu Village as a free place: the habitat of thousands of white herons that return to the treetops every late afternoon, open daily from 06.00 to 19.00 WITA.8 The spectacle depends on the birds and not on a ticket, so it is a good, cheap way to close a day in the rice country before dinner or a dance performance. Arrive before the light fades and find a spot where the birds are not disturbed, since the show is theirs.

The Monkey Forest in a few paragraphs

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM with the last entrance at 5:00 PM, and its adult fee is IDR 130,000, with IDR 100,000 for a child.3 The sanctuary counts approximately 1,054 monkeys in 7 groups, and its rules prohibit food and drinks inside.14,27 The page on this site about the forest covers hours, rules, temples and the troop counts in full. Those figures come from the sanctuary's own pages, so check the lobby board for any change on the day you go.

The forest sits well in a day because it is shaded and has a fixed duration. The site's Viator day tour lists 60 minutes there, and a full-day group listing lists 75 minutes. If you walk from the palace, the route passes shops and cafes, which suits a mid-morning visit when the air is still cool. The shade and the short loop make it easy to fit before lunch. Allow the full hour and a little more if you want to linger by the water.

Add the weekend stage show if the calendar fits. Balinese dance plays on its open stage at weekends, at 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.28 If you visit on a weekday, you can still circle the three temples from outside and pause at the central banyan, where the paths meet. The monkeys keep their own schedule, which is part of what makes a short visit memorable. The dance adds sound and color to a visit, and it is easy to combine with lunch at the cafe next to the stage.

Holy springs, caves, waterfalls and birds beyond town

At Tirta Empul, the ministry says that to take part in the bathing ritual you should wear traditional attire or a yellow sash and refrain from using soap, shampoo or similar products.24 Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave, has four distinct complexes, and the ministry says a sarong and sash are essential and can be rented on site.25 Both are working sacred places first and sights second. Leave valuables with your driver or in a locker and bring a change of clothes if you plan to enter the water.

Kanto Lampo Waterfall lies in Banjar Kelod Kangin in Gianyar, is 15 meters high, and is considered sacred by the community as a beji for holy-water ceremonies, so respect local customs when you visit.26 The site's day tour includes Tirta Empul for 60 minutes and Tegenungan waterfall for 45 minutes in its itinerary. A private tour with a waterfall focus is another way to string these places together.

Bali Bird Park is a different kind of stop: the ministry says it holds a collection of 1,000 birds from 250 different species.29 It suits a family with small children who want a seat in the shade. The sights in this section sit away from the central loop, so plan them around a driver or a rented vehicle, and allow for the drive time between each in your schedule. Check the park's opening hours before you set out, since this guide does not quote a fee for it.

After dark: the palace dance and a quiet dinner

The ministry says nightly Legong performances at Ubud Palace are among the most beautiful and authentic in Bali.15 A GetYourGuide ticket listing gives the show time as daily at 7:30 PM with an approximate duration of 90 minutes, and recommends arriving at least 45 minutes early to secure a seat. A seat costs from $6. Seats are filled early, so the advice to arrive well ahead of the start time is worth following.

Indonesia.Travel says Legong is believed to date from the 17th or 18th century, and to have begun at Bali's royal courts.30 Dancers use the seledet technique, darting the eyes in rhythm with the music, and symbolic finger gestures called mudras, accompanied by a gamelan orchestra.31 The full evening guide on this site covers the other options, from Kecak to fireflies. Watching with those details in mind turns the show from a pretty spectacle into a language you can start to read.

For dinner, the ministry's first-timer guide names Swept Away restaurant in Ubud, on an elevated deck over a river with lanterns and candles making the night more romantic.32 The dance and dinner pair well if you book a table after the show or before it. Book ahead and tell the restaurant your show time so that the meal ends before you need to leave. A relaxed dinner and a dance make a full and unhurried evening. Ask your hotel to help with a reservation, and allow time for the short ride back through the quiet streets.

Rules that travel with you around Bali

Bali's governor issued Circular Letter number 7 of 2025 with guidelines for foreign tourists, announced on March 24, 2025.33 It asks visitors to respect sacred sites and symbols, dress modestly at temples, attractions and public spaces, and pay the tourist levy electronically via lovebali.baliprov.go.id.34,35 Pack a sarong or a long skirt in your day bag, because several of the sights in this guide are working temples.

The circular also says tourists driving in Bali need a valid international or national driver's license, must wear a helmet on a motorbike, follow traffic signs and must not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.36 Ubud's hills and narrow roads make that requirement real: if you plan to rent a scooter for the northern loop, carry your license and check that the helmet fits properly before you leave the shop.

Finally, the circular says tourists should use licensed tour guides at cultural and natural sites, who understand local traditions and natural conditions.37 The site's Viator tour is described as a private tour with a live English-speaking guide, a maximum group size of 15, and cancellation that stays free until 24 hours before. Guides also carry the local knowledge that no page can, such as which gate to use or when a ceremony is under way. The list of What to do around Ubud, Bali, is long, and these rules apply to every item on it.
